Himalaya

A converted VW bus, loaded to the brim with silk, linen and handmade jewelry – and filled to the brim with courage, vision and a desire for adventure. That was the beginning. No investors, no business plans. Only Alexander Frieborg, a dream – and the irrepressible desire to discover the world in his own way.

Back in the 1970s, he felt drawn to the Himalayas, looking for something special, in India, Nepal and Tibet. Where other tourists grabbed their cameras, he sought conversation – with weavers, artisans and traders. And he found character, stories and fabrics with soul.

He sold his first finds – hand-picked textiles and artistic jewelry – directly from his market stall in Hamburg. Farmers’ markets, flea markets – where you still look people straight in the eye. What he brought was not a commodity. It was magic, made tangible.

HIMALAYA TODAY

What once began with an adventurer’s heart is now a household name in the European fashion market for sustainable, fair fashion with character.

They never quite let go of the colorful hippie charm of Himalaya’s early years, but they have moved on. Each collection now embodies not only individuality, but also a sense of style, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Colorful patterns, bold patchwork elements and tactile quality make each HIMALAYA piece a piece of lived philosophy.

They evolve – with each journey, each substance, each new idea. The designers create two collections a year, which are produced in professional production facilities in India and Nepal – under constant supervision of their own quality control and in close contact with local producers.

By the way, Alexander Frieborg himself still travels to the region regularly – not only as an entrepreneur, but also as a friend, as a mediator, as part of a community that has grown over decades.

Because at HIMALAYA, it’s never just about clothes. It’s about attitude. To heritage. And to the future of fashion that tells stories.
